These sites contain some awesome photography. The "wisconsinshipwrecks.org" provides a three demensional image of a historic Great Lakes schooner which can be turned for viewing from all angles!

The Advocate is a wonderful source for maritime events, especially on Lake Michigan, and especially in the last quarter of the 19th century and early 20th century.
Great Lakes Shipwreck Research: a forum for historians and divers
Databases on Great Lakes Maritime History are growing. This site will give you links to a number of them. It also gives you access to a research service (if you are wanting information, but don't know where to look or how to get started). Finally, it will help you connect with a newsgroup for those interested in GL shipping, shipwrecks and diving.
Maritime History of the Great Lakes: a premier page for students of history
A broad collection of fascinating primary sources for early shipping on the lakes, plus articles reflecting recent research. Lots of material from Lake Ontario which is missing on other sites listed here. Help for those wanting to do research in Canada. Includes a listing of nearly 6,000 vessel enrollments from the US between 1816 and 1860. Good source material on British ships on the lakes between the French and Indain War and the War of 1812.

The Wisconsin Marine Historical Society has a database of 50,000 enrollments which can be accessed and copies of the actual documents can be purchased. Go to their home page and follow the links to the enrollments search. You will find lots of other interesting features of this site on the home page.
The Milwaukee Public Library is a treasure trove of information
The library is not only home to a huge collection of books, but also houses databases such as the Runge Collection, enrollment and life-saving records, photographs, charts, ship models, and an index (!) to the Milwaukee Sentinel newspaper. To see if the library has a file on a specific vessel check out the following site. Put in the name of the vessel, shipbuilder or ship owner you are interested in the subject search and see what turns up.
The lakes are ringed by fine museums and libraries & you can access them all
Too many to list here, so go to the website of the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History (AGLMH) and there you will find links to all the institutions that belong to the association. Some of these, like the Great Lakes Historical Collection at Bowling Green, Ohio, have a huge collection of archival materials. Members of the Association get a newsletter which tells what events the various institutions are putting on. AGLMH also hosts an online forum for posting information and questions about Great Lakes maritime history. Lest we forget the other Great Lake - Lake Champlain
Long before the upper lakes were fully explored, Lake Champlain was a vital corridore of commerce and empire. Early shipbuilding on this lake is well documented in some wonderful archeological studies. Some great books for sale, too.
